Do I need skid plates if my Toyota Tacoma rarely goes off road?

Do I need to drill the Tacoma frame during installation?

What happens if the skid plates take a hard hit?

Metal skid plates create an additional barrier between an obstacle and the engine or transmission, absorbing part of the impact before it reaches critical components.

A severe hit can still deform the metal and transfer some of the force to the vehicle, so skid plates do not make the engine or transmission immune to damage. Without that protection, however, the same obstacle could strike those components directly and cause significantly more serious damage.

After a hard impact, inspect the skid plates and mounting hardware and make sure there is still adequate clearance between the plates and the vehicle. If a deformed section begins touching the engine, transmission, exhaust system, or other components, it should be removed and straightened or replaced.

Are the skid plates protected against corrosion?

BMS skid plates have a polymer coating that helps protect the metal surface. During highway, gravel-road, and off-road use, rocks, sand, and direct contact with obstacles can eventually scratch or chip that coating. Aluminum skid plates do not rust, so chips and scratches in the coating are less of a concern from that standpoint.

Do the skid plates reduce ground clearance?

The BMS skid plate system follows the underbody geometry of the Toyota Tacoma and has only a small effect on ground clearance – approximately 2–3 cm (0.8–1.2 in).

For a pickup like the Tacoma, that reduction has little effect on overall trail capability while adding useful protection against rocks, branches, and other obstacles that pass between the wheels.
